1. Geçmişe ait bir gelecek zamanı belirtir: The day when he would depart was drawing near. Gideceği gün yaklaşıyordu. They told us they would resign. Bize istifa edeceklerini söylediler. 3. Niyet belirtir: He said he´d inform me by Friday. Cumaya kadar bana bildireceğini söyledi. He decided he´d do it. Onu yapmaya karar verdi.
4. İstek/seçim/tercih belirtir: I was hoping she´d come. Geleceğini umuyordum. I´d hate to have to do that. Onu hiç yapmak istemezdim. If only you´d help me! Ah bana bir yardım etsen! 5. İnat/ısrar/kararlılık belirtir: She would keep correcting me! Yanlışlarımı düzeltip dururdu. You would go and tell her, wouldn´t you? Yine de gidip ona söyledin, değil mi? Nimet really got everybody´s dander up. But then she would, wouldn´t she? Nimet herkesi çileden çıkardı. Fakat hep öyle yapar, değil mi? He would go, say what I might. 8. Beklenti/ihtimal belirtir: I expected he would behave like that. Onun öyle davranacağını bekliyordum. He was convinced he wouldn´t come. Onun gelmeyeceğine kanaat getirdi. That wouldn´t be Fevzi, would it? O Fevzi olmasın? That would have been our Fatoş. O herhalde bizim Fatoş´tu. I think they´d now be playing tennis. Bence şimdi tenis oynuyorlardır. They left early for fear they would meet him. Onunla karşılaşacaklarından korkarak erken çıktılar.
9. Bazı şartlı cümlelerde kullanılır: If you were in my position what would you do? Benim yerimde olsan ne yaparsın? If he were to come you´d tell us, wouldn´t you?
